Had a blast doing a zoom class on sgraffito with @mouseceramicstudio last night - please join us again next Wednesday evening at 7:15 for part 2, which will focus on surface texture and slip/underglaze inlay. The zoom id is 591 721 8461; Mouse is requesting that if you are able, please donate to Communities United for Police Reform in lieu of a registration fee. Thanks so much to everyone who joined last night! #pottery #ceramics #sgraffito
I’m hosting a sgraffito demo for the next two Wednesday evenings through @mouseceramicstudio starting this week - 7:15-8:00 EST. Mouse has lined up some awesome remote programming during NYC’s shutdown, and now they are extending their reach for some worthy causes, including raising funds for police reform - see registration info below, and DM with any questions! Stoked to see everyone on Wednesday!

I’ll be teaching a 4-week online course @greenwichhousepottery in July that focuses on archaeological ceramics - the history of the field, different innovations, and how archaeologists examine ceramics to answer different questions. Each class is an hour long. Registration starts tomorrow at noon - see link in profile. In the meantime, I hope everyone is staying safe out there. Pictured here is a wheelthrown and carved lidded hat that I made for @ambre_solaire , who I had the great luck to work with for the better part of a decade in Pompeii. Standard 211 with underglazes and glaze. #pottery #ceramics #clay #archaeology #archaeologicalceramics #artistsofghp
If you are able, now is a great time to donate to the Minnesota Freedom Fund @mnfreedomfund or the Brooklyn Community Bail Fund @brooklynbailfund . The police need to be defunded and held accountable for the violence that they disproportionately inflict on Black communities and other non-white communities. If you are white, please recognize your privilege that includes not being systematically targeted, harassed, and murdered by purveyors of state-sanctioned violence. Burn it all down. #blacklivesmatter
Might have to make a few different versions of this - bending cones in a firing. Carved and inlaid with underglazes, unfired here but kiln bound soon enough! #pottery #ceramics #clay #artistsofghp
Some non-ceramic work - enormously proud of the cartographic work that I did for @allison.emmerson ‘s new book, ‘Life and Death in the Roman Suburb’, which came out on Monday through OUP. First pic is one of many that I did for this book. Working on maps from several sites throughout Italy was both a really fun challenge and a walk down memory lane. Cannot wait to read Allison’s brilliant analysis of some 30 sites. Link in profile for those interested in learning more about this publication! #archaeology #cartography #illustration
Kiln portrait detail. Underglaze in white stoneware, unfired. #pottery #ceramics #clay #sgraffito #artistsofghp
Did I spend the last two class sessions making some vaguely Phil Collins/Genesis-themed pottery as a demo on sgraffito lettering, stencil use, and inlay? Indeed I did. This line, taken from the 1984 banger ‘Land of Confusion’, seemed...appropriate. Underglaze on Standard 182 white stoneware, which I’ll fire to cone 6. #pottery #ceramics #clay #sgraffito #philcollins #landofconfusion #artistsofghp
Painted this glass window closet door in our apartment a couple years ago because Neel always wanted a Great Gatsby / eyes of God reference in here somewhere. Previously, this clear window gave away all of our messy-closet secrets but now it looks mystical and magical and left me with a newfound appreciation for old-timey sign painters. #glasspainting #artistsofghp
Back in kiln-firing action thanks to @mouseceramicstudio - here are a few lil dishes from a bisque load that I picked up this weekend. NYC and Brooklyn, you can rent out a kiln there with contactless dropoff and pickup. Now I just have to build up the mental wherewithal to glaze...#pottery #ceramics #clay #volcano #artistsofghp
