Another small wall piece that is up in @mantle_artspace exhibition Excavations; Sanctuary, opening tomorrow night, 6-9 PM. Looks like an excellent show, check it out if you are in the San Antonio area.
Hey Philly friends, the Small Favors opening @theclaystudiophl has been moved to this coming Thursday evening (instead of Saturday afternoon) - while I will no longer be in town for the opening, you should check it out nonetheless! Sorry to miss you all this week but I’ll be back soon. Pictured is not a small favor, but a piece that I did make at The Clay Studio probably a decade ago - I broke it shortly thereafter but held onto it because I just really liked it. Well now it has new life in the form of a thoroughly modern acrylic medium repair, aka I glued this pot back together with puffy paint. If only we all could exit and re-enter our use-life with such charm! #pottery #ceramics #repair
So fun to catch up with @michellemcauliffe - thanks for the gorgeous flowers! @mandy_cano_villalobos we wished you were here too!
Very jazzed to have this little lararium heading to San Antonio’s @mantle_artspace for their April 20th show, ‘Excavations; Sanctuary’. Mantle promotes accessibility and inclusivity in the art world as a core part of their mission. This show was curated by @alex_ebstein , who seems to always be putting together cool weird shows. This wall-hanging piece is stoneware with underglazes and directly references the lararium, or household shrine, commonly found in Roman homes (and shops, and on public streets...). Archaeologically these are often seen built into walls, and to me they often look like little portals to another dimension. Which I guess they are, depending on what you worship. This and its companion piece are the first in a new body of work I’ve been chewing on, and this show gave me the perfect reason to put it out in the world. #ceramics #lararium
Hey Philly, come and bid on this 12” platter for @acctphilly May 3rd gala - this organization does massive work in rescuing and rehoming pitties. This 2-headed dog obvs inspired by Roky Erickson and is currently awaiting a glaze bath but you get the idea. #ceramics #pottery #sgraffito #2headeddog #acctphilly
Manticore, my manticore! I think about this hard-paste porcelain manticore from @metmuseum probably once a day. Made in Austria in 1735 in the Du Paquier factory and part of the collection of Hans Syz. That face!! #ceramics #porcelain
Can’t stop thinking about this awesome goat pot that I saw at a hotel in Sorrento last summer. Vesuvius photobomb in background. I might have to try my own version of this...#pottery #ceramics #goat #sorrento #vesuvius
Drawing my face off lately - on clay, on paper, in a digital realm. This one was a bit of a departure, my own version of black-figure pottery, with more of a focus on line than mark-making. This went to some good friends as an anniversary gift, or an egregiously late wedding gift. #pottery #ceramics #sgraffito
Commission for a couple who got hitched in a field of bright peonies on a mountain - I tried to recreate a simplified version of a scene that sounded absolutely lovely. I’ve been getting a lot of loose requests for floral/botanical work lately, which has been a great reason to boost my flower game. That’s one of the biggest reasons I love commission work - makes me keep those tech skills sharp and new. Also it was really great to see @kaaariiiina to pass this piece along! Hope your friends liked it! #pottery #ceramics #sgraffito
Shimmering magic mountains in the sun. I usually do a few very thin coats of a zinc-free clear glaze and I really like this weird glittery effect is leaves on larger fields of carved pattern. This is standard 308 with a white slip base and underglazes, fired to cone 6 ox. #pottery #ceramics #sgraffito
